THE SMALL SCREENS VS BIG SCREENS

In 2022, Netflix’s revenue was 31.6 billion dollars, whereas in that same year, the global box office generated 26 billion dollars. So what is happening here? According to the statistics and many people, we can say that Netflix is going to demolish theatres, but movies like Jawan, Oppenheimer, and Pathan proved them wrong, so what exactly is going to happen? It’s a fight between streaming services and theatre.

THE SMALL SCREENS VS. THE BIG SCREENS

NETFLIX We can’t forget about Netflix Originals anytime and anywhere. You just require a device with a screen and an internet connection, and voila! You are good to go. It’s by far the most convenient mode of entertainment for most of us. No wonder it’s giving the big-timers a hard time. Netflix allows you to watch in HD, FHD, and even UHD (according to the plan you subscribe to).

So yeah, you get the idea: Netflix = convenience.

Let’s go to the theatre for a while (not asking you out, >_<).

A movie theatre, also referred to as a cinema hall, the big screen, the silver screen, a movie house, a picture house, a picture theatre, or simply a theatre, is a venue designed for showcasing films for public entertainment. These theatres are generally businesses that are open to the general public, who can watch the films by buying tickets. Most movie theatres operate commercially, serving up entertainment to the masses, and they present:

  • A bigger and more immersive screen
  • Top-of-line sound system (A good thump is quite important for good music.)
  • The loud screaming of the audience, which can be irritating sometimes, but if it hits the right spot, yeah, that’s heavenly. (Tip: Stop being an introvert and join the screaming.) If you are watching Bollywood and not screaming about a hero’s entry, that’s a crime.

So, that’s settled, right? Cancel your Netflix subscription now. Quit being lazy, move your body, go to a theatre, and scream. Umm, kind of yes, but no! Convenience is not a bad thing, and if you don’t have a proper theatre in your town, then Netflix or any other streaming service is your only option.

In my opinion, there should be a space for both of them in our lives. The movie experience in theatres is unparalleled; I am not sure if anything can even come close to it, but if you just want to watch a movie and spend some quiet quality time with your loved ones in your house without doing much hassle (assuming you can’t bear those long ads of traditional cable TV), then yes, just put on some Netflix and chill, but if you want to “experience” a movie, then you know where to go.
