Recently a new type of scam has entered the market in which scammers use AI to replicate the voice of your close ones and ask money from you pretending to be them.
Day by day it is becoming more tough to track these scams and if you are not careful enough there is a high chance of you being the next victim of these “AI-Scammers”.
I mean look at these stats and tell me they are not concerning.
Approx,83% of Indians have fallen victim to AI voice scams, losing hard-earned money.48% of these victims reported losses exceeding ₹50,000.These numbers are quite high. We can’t possibly take it lightly.
There is a simple pattern in how these scammers try to scam us:
- You already know how these scammers can replicate the voices of your close ones to talk to you on a phone call.
- They will use the voice of your close ones to call you and they will pretend like they are in a lot of trouble and only you can save them by sending the money they demand.
- They will try to exploit your trust and play with the pure emotions of love that you feel about your close ones.
Now, how do you protect yourself from these scammers?
- You need to educate yourself and all your friends and family about these modern AI-based scams. Being aware and making others aware of this is the first step to prevent them.
- Once you receive such a call, ask them to switch to a video call, and after the call always cross-check with them in person. One more important thing is most of the time these calls come from unknown numbers so keep that in mind.
- Start treating your voice as a piece of sensitive information and make sure to record such calls.
In conclusion, AI is developing and spreading at a very rapid pace, and we must use it responsibly. I don’t know if AI will be able to destroy humanity or not but the people who don’t know how to use these advanced tools ethically would become the reason for people to trust each other a lot less than before.
